STEM Woman Of The Year Award By Girls, Inc. Given To Dr. Sharona Ross

Girls, Inc. is a nationwide organization that works diligently to ensure that the young girls and women of America are not missing important economic, education, and employment opportunities, either due to disenfranchisement or other systemic issues. For both her work with Girls, Inc. and as a doctor practicing groundbreaking, minimally-invasive, and robot-assisted surgery, Sharona Ross, M.D. of The Southeastern Center for Digestive Disorders and Pancreatic Cancer (Florida Hospital Tampa) was given the STEM Woman of the Year Award for 2017. This is an incredible achievement that Dr. Ross is honored to have earned.

During the award ceremony on Friday, May 5^th, 2017, Dr. Ross spoke about her personal journey of becoming a surgeon. She also discussed the importance of shadowing and mentoring young women interested in STEM-related careers and futures, and why it has become a focus of her life.

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Historically, careers within these four fields have been predominately filled by males, despite women throughout the decades and centuries having the same interests and talents. Part of Girls, Inc. and Dr. Ross’s goals is encouraging women of all ages to catch their dreams, settle for nothing but the best accomplishments, and becoming tomorrow’s leading professionals in STEM.
